Bearded Armorhead

When I first sketched this guy's profile (see inset) I wasn't too thrilled with it, but I used it anyway and as it turned out he's now one of my favorites.

Ode to Goatboy

After sitting next to Thomas (aka Goatboy) at Starbucks watching him work I had the irresistible urge to draw a bionic girl with a big, square-bladed sword and tentacles.

Succubus Sketch

A quick sketch I did while hanging with the sketch group Thursday night at Starbucks.

RED DRAGON INN cover in color

Well I haven't posted in a few days because I've been busy with this and I am very glad to see it to fruition. When I started doing work for Slugfest Games a little over a year and a half ago I had never done any work digitally and I feel like this piece shows how I have progressed. I'm excited to do some more stuff along these lines.
My favorite part of this piece is the pipe-smoking, little, elf/hobbit guy on the left, he came out pretty well.

Spotted Murk Dweller

Okay I've decided I'm going to try and name these guys, we'll see how original I can be.
Suberbowl today, whoo hoo!

Red Dragon Inn Cover

The final layout for the cover illustration for the cover of The Red Dragon Inn card game. The logo will cover the upper third so I avoided adding a lot of extraneous detail. Unfortunately the cool dragon skull on the mantle will be covered up as well but I had to draw one.

Armor Girl

I sketched this armored maiden during commercial breaks while watching 24 last night. 3H pencil on copy paper.

Sir Kit

A relatively unknown member of King Arthur's round table. When most of the questing knights failed to return from the quest for the grail, Arthur's faithful cat took up sword and shield and struck out into the wild for king and country!

New/Old Fish Sculpture

I've had a couple of fish sculptures that I never got around to finishing so I figured I'd dig them out and finish them. I put the fin spines on this guy tonight and will put the fins on him tomorrow. He's not nearly as big as my Red Snouted Spinyfish (see my website, under sculpture) so scaling him won't be such a huge undertaking either. No football to watch this weekend so he should be complete by next week.

Blue Monday Fish

Well I've decided I'm going to try and do a fish a day for a full year, we'll see how long that lasts. I'm already a few behind. I did this fellow while sketching with the Houston-based Sketch Klubb (parental discretion is advised) Saturday morning. It was good meeting the guys.

Friday Fish

The topic is "Moustaches" for the weekly sketch group I'm part of so logically I had to do a fish with a big moustache.

Tuesday Fish

Okay maybe he should have been the Monday fish from the look on his face or maybe the I-need-more-coffee fish.

The Frog Temple & Fort Tree

I'm currently working on a setting map for Captain Bogg & Salty's new album entitled "Frogg Island". It is a lot of fun working on it. I plan on posting in-progress sketches and layouts as I go along. The temple is one of the most prominent features and where the island takes it's name so I figured I'd tackle it first. The Fort Tree is just another cool feature of the map.

Warrior Girl

Here's a sketch I did at Wizard World TX for my new pal Tess.
She was kind enough to send me a scan of it. Sweet.

Fish of the Week

Another weird fish. This one for the weekly sketch.

FAE

Some concept stuff I'm doing for Baeg Tobar. Just getting warmed up and my head around the world setting. My new pal from Wizard World Texas Jeremy Mohler, has done a lot of work on this (along with doing lots of cool artwork, the whole thing is his brainchild). Cool stuff.

Old School Cover w/color

Here's the final cover with color. The client wanted an old school gaming book cover feel thus the flat, saturated colors.

Dwarf Sketch

A dwarf sketch for an illustration I'm putting together. Dwarves in armor with big axes are always fun to draw.

My fish Vince.

Here's another weird fish, this time it's a picture of my goldfish Vince. He has a knack for eating (killing?) my other fish so I thought I'd draw him as the other fish might. He has a little castle too so I drew that in there as well.

Weird Fish

Here's a weird fish I drew at Wizard World Texas over this past weekend. The con was a lot of fun, met some really cool people and saw a lot of really awesome art. I can't wait for next year's.

IMPERIAL LANCE

The cover for the preview issue of Imperial Lance. I'm going to Wizard World Dallas this weekend to promote it's release.

Why art.

One day as I was painting (a design on a shield I recall), my stepfather comes up behind me and says, "Why are you doing that? I didn't know there was a big call for painted shields." He was being sarcastic but his point was clear: "Why are you wasting your time with that? It doesn't do anything and it won't make you any money." He was right. It doesn't and it didn't. I just responded with something like, " Because I want to."
As I was reading the new National Geographic today I came upon an article about an aged couple who do artwork. They create huge works of art that cost millions of dollars to produce. They hang huge sheets of fabric in parks and landscapes and each show only hangs for two weeks then it's gone. Forever. They pay for all the costs themselves (their preparatory work sells between the 5 and 6 figure range which finance their projects), accept no public funding or corporate sponsorship, make no money on the artwork itself, and accept all the headaches that go along with it (logistics, permits, public hearings, opposition groups, etc...). When asked why they do it they responded:
" All our projects are absolutely irrational with no justification to exist. They are created because Jeanne-Claude and I (Christo) have this unstoppable urge to create. They are made first for us. Not the public."
I wish I would have had this quote handy when my stepfather had asked.

Scary sketch.

Sometimes I freak myself out. I sketched this while sitting at Starbuck's last night. It's a sketch for a project I have cooking.

RDI Logo

The logo I did for The Red Dragon Inn card game by Slugfest Games. Was done almost almost exclusively in Photoshop 7 on a laptop.
